Design For Print & Web: App Design

Having not designed an App before I felt it necessary to explore some modern app design to pick up some visual elements that are common with app design, having started to design the website I want to bring some of the visual cues used on the website to the app but I want the app to be familiar to the user   so they can easily use it therefore I am looking at commonality with the functions and design of these apps. I have mostly researched into video and media as this is essentially what my app will be doing. A key element I have found is emphasis on image, which I have done with the website so this transfer across easily. Within all of the apps iconography is the key. Most of these apps work on an icon basis therefore using understandable and familiar icons within my app it should make the app more user friendly. Limited colour palette and change in colour contrast is also an common element in which different parts of the app they provide different functions have stark colour changes for example a bright white contrasted with a dark grey this adds depth to the app and guides the user round the functionality of the app though colour.

Design For Print & Web: Printing with Neon Green

After speaking with James and finding out he can print the colour green but only on stock that isn't foldable, I am considering using a green neon stock for products that require the stock to be folded. I have looked into a few pieces of design which using the method of printing onto a neon stock with an ink, commonly black. I think the black works really well against the neon green, they compliment each other in their boldness and neither distracts from the other. I also think it makes for readable and legible design. Printing black on top of the stock looks like the most feasible option to provide the most effective results. However I also think the white contrast well with the neon but this would have to be printed with James.

Design For Print & Web: Websites

The website forms the main component of my brief, I have researched into a selection of website that the design aesthetic I am trying to create and also website that are media and tv based this enable me to greater understand what functionality is needed on a channels website, which is as follows
  • Information of the shows which the channel presents
  • On demand functionality
  • Scheduling information
Within the website for TV channels the websites are all constructed around imagery of the programmes. this imagery dominates the page. Also the website use simple typography commonly in white as it is the most readable against photographic images. Similarly text is minimal is placed over the images in a large size with less relevant information being smaller and placed bellow images. Within my own design I want it to use flat rather than trying to create 3D like elements that many user interfaces have. I have researched into some website that do this, they do this effectively through sticking to a minimal colour palette of a maximum of 3 colours.

Design For Print & Web: A Product Range

I have used visual research to investigate into a possible products that could form my product range for the print component to the brief, I am using the print component of the brief to launch the channel to the public. I have been looking into products that can be used to both promote the brand and channel but also products that link with the viewing experience. From this research I found that a tote, I think, will be crucial as the promotional items can all be placed in the tote and given out as a promotional pack. In terms of printed ephermera I think postcard style leaflet would work effectively as they can be handed out but be part the back, they are also very affordable. From the research I have conducted I think its evident that the most effective way of working with promotional items is to keep the text to a minimum and deliver a short message, and then use the brand image and colour to complete the aesthetic. Most of these designs are simple and do not aim to deliver masses of information but one, short clear message.

Products I can consider for promotional items;
  • Food packaging
  • Stickers
  • Flyers and leaflets
  • CD/DVD
  • Booklets
  • Tote bags
